Base Fog

If the unexposed part of the film is grey to black it is said to have been fogged.

Reduced Contrast

The film has many shades pf grey and no extremes of black and white (flat film)

Increased Contrast

The film has few shades of grey, just extremes of black and white (soot and whitewash film).

Underdeveloped

Little contrast, image looks thin and grey (common darkroom fault).

Overdeveloped

Film looks very dark (rare fault).

Moist film

Wet and sticky.

Poor Clearing

Murky opacity spread evenly across film.

Dirty film

Dirt

Scratches

Surface marks

Poor archiving

Insufficient fixing, film goes brown in storage

No image

Usually means gross operator error - Start again!!
